If you were not aware, Lorain County owes its name to an area in France that was called Lorraine. Heman Ely, who came to the area in the beginning of the 19th century, bestowed this name upon Lorain County because for him our wonderful county was reminiscent of that part of France of which Ely had some very pleasant memories. Ely founded the city of Elyria, where he build a gristmill and sawmill.
It was 1822 when Lorain County made its official mark on the map, after it was created from parts of the counties of Cuyahoga, Medina and Huron.

Ely's investment into the area, along with the Lorain Steel Plant made the area increasingly attractive to those looking for new opportunities.
And the Lorain Steel Plant remains an important part of Lorain County life. It was the steel plant that drew more people to the area. As a source of employment, the steel mill meant that more and more people descended upon the area. And course with an increased population, Lorain county developed other businesses and industries to support its growing population.
And LorMet Community Federal Union had its start in the steel plant when a group of steel mill workers decided that they could do more to further themselves financially if they banded together than they could do if they tried to grow their money as individuals.
The enterprising spirit of Ely and the steel plant workers remains woven into the fabric of Lorain County life today.
